The Basics of Auto Insurance

December 6th, 2007

Auto insurance is illegal not to have. But that does not mean you want to buy some insurance just to get it over with. You want to make sure you know what you are getting into and what to expect. Even though this service is required, you still need to make sure it works for you and that you are not just giving your money away. Here are the parts that go into a great insurance policy.

The Parts You Need to Know

  • Bodily injury and personal liability
  • These are the insurance that will protect the policy holder against any injuries that will be caused to other people or other property. You are required by law in all 50 states to have at least the minimum liability coverage amounts available. You need to take note of each options and how much each policy will cover if you find yourself in an accident.

  • Personal injury protection
  • This protection will pay for your medical expenses and your lost wages as well as the same for any passengers injured during the accident. There is a possibly that your states may not require you to get some sort of PIP. But if you have solid medical policies, then you may not need the most PIP coverage. The lowest PIP may work for you in that situation.

  • Collision and comprehensive
  • These can tend to add large cost to the premium you will be paying. Collision covers you for just that, collisions. But it does not have to be with a car. It can be with another object. Comprehensive covers you in the event of theft or break in. You are also covered for any natural disaster that may occur. If you have confidence in the area you live in (as far as disasters are concerned), and in your driving, then you may opt for a higher deductible and a lower premium.

  • Uninsured motorist
  • In case you get in an accident with a driver who does not have insurance, then you are ok. This also goes for a hit and run. If the other person does not have the proper coverage to cover all of the damages, then this will come into play also.

Auto Insurance You Can Use

This is the key. You need insurance that will help you, not just a form you can show people when you find yourself in an accident. Auto insurance can really cover you in a time of need. So do not fool around and just get one for the sake of it. Because, if you get in an accident, you want some insurance you can trust.
