Myths about Traffic Tickets

Everybody has those friends that think they are experts when it comes to legal matters. They think they know everything there is to know about traffic matters. In reality, there are a lot of myths about traffic tickets that many people think are true but are not. Myths can be fun, as long as they aren’t taken too seriously. Here are some of the most egregious myths about traffic violations.

If the Officer Does Not Show Up You Win Automatically

This does happen, but there is no guarantee that it will. The judge will usually drop the case because you have a right to question those who accuse you of something. But it is also possible that the judge will reschedule. Cases are heard at a time that gives the officer the best chance to be present. Just know there is no guarantee you can get the case dropped.

Cars That Are Red Get More Tickets

The explanation for this one can be anything from “they are nicer to look at,” “they attract more attention from everyone on the road,” or “red creates the illusion that the car is going faster than it actually is.” In truth, there are no official studies that say color matters when getting a ticket. Police officers often deny this. If you go the speed limit and obey all traffic laws, you will not get a ticket regardless of your car’s color.

You Can Make Up An Excuse and Get Out of it

If you get pulled over, then there is a good reason for it. Police officers are not very thrilled to hear any excuse you may give them. If they pull you over for speeding and you say “yeah but…,” then you are confirming that you were speeding, even though you thought you had an excuse. So excuses can actually hurt you more than they will help you.

The Ticket Will Be Dismissed if You Do Not Sign it

If you sign a ticket, you are not agreeing that you are guilty. You are just letting them know that you realize you have been given a ticket. Refusal to sign will just make the officer angry and you will run the risk of getting other tickets. In some states, you can even go to jail if you do not sign a ticket.

Be Safe

The key to being in control in traffic matters is too remain safe. Obey all the laws of the road, and you will be fine. The best way to avoid a ticket is to know the myths, pay attention, and obey the law.
