Thinking of Leasing?

January 4th, 2008

You have probably come across many people who do not buy car, but lease them. I know I have known many people who do this. They are very happy with the idea of leasing and it really works out well for them. Is leasing something you should do? There are some strong pros and some strong cons when it comes to leasing a vehicle instead of buying. Hopefully these help you decide what you need to do.

Leasing Pros

If you think you will have trouble coming up with a down payment, then you might want to lease. Leasing deals often require less of a down payment then purchasing deals do. This may be a main reason why you lease instead of buy.

Same goes with monthly payments. Overall you may find that your monthly fees are less then they would be when buying a car. The idea of saving money and leasing really go together. Less of a down payment and less on the monthly payments can really be helpful.

When your leasing deal ends you should not expect a lot of troubles and hassle. You do not have to sell the car or trade it in; all you need to do is return it. The dealership will take it back and that is all your need to worry about.

Leasing Cons

You never own the car. Since you are leasing you will always have a car payment. There will never be a time you are driving the car and do not have to worry about the payment the next month. This means that the car is not yours.

You will be locked in for the entire lease agreement. If you really like the car then this should not be a con. If you find this car is not for you that is when the trouble begins. Leasing agents may not let you out of the deal. If they do let you out then you need to know that this will cost your a lot of money. They will penalize you for not living up to your part of the agreement.

When you lease you might come to specific terms about the amount you are allowed to drive. You might set a mileage limit. If you go over this limit then you will be subject to fees and charges. This really limits the freedom you have with the car. If you want to lease a car and drive it across country then you need to make sure you get a high mileage limit or no limit at all.

Leasing people really expect that you return your cars in the shape you got them. If you are someone who has trouble keeping cars in good shape then know you will be subject to fees and repair costs. Know this going in.
