You know the symbol, and you know the car. What you may not know is the history. Although it has been brief, Lexus has definitely made its mark on the automobile industry. Lexus combines a rugged vehicle with the right amount of class. What makes Lexus so popular, and where did it come from? That is something we are all about to find out together.
The Birth of Lexus
Lexus debuted in 1989. But the formation of this car started before that year. It dates back to 1983. The Toyota Company set out on a mission to create a luxury vehicle that could go head to head with the world’s best automobiles. Around 1986, the finalized ideas came about. Complete with style, logo, and marketing. All their hard work paid off. After 24 engineering teams, 1,400 engineers, 60 designers, 2,300 technicians, 450 prototypes, 220 support workers, and over $1 billion spent, the Lexus project was complete. But at that time it was called the F1 project. The debut of Lexus saw them demonstrating the smoothness of aV8 engine by placing champagne glasses on the hood while in the middle of accelerating.
Lexus Currently
Lexus is now the top selling luxury brand of automobile in the United States. Over 320,000 were sold in the U.S. alone. This marked the seventh straight year they lead the U.S. market. Lexus has their vehicles available in over 40 countries. The original Lexus sedan is now in its fourth upgrade, and they keep getting more and more successful. The Lexus RX is the most popular Lexus. They also look to be a pioneer in the ever growing world of hybrid vehicles, by introducing the first hybrid SUV in 2005. Lexus is also looking into expanding its market in the world of racing inspired vehicles. Europe has even unveiled a diesel powered Lexus, which is not currently available in the United States or Canada. Lexus continues to maintain its original relationship with Toyota.
Lexus in the Pop Culture World
Lexus has seen its popularity rise among the rich and famous. They are a primary sponsor for the U.S. Open tennis tournament (winners get a Lexus to drive home). A fleet of 125 vehicles escorts all the players around during their time in New York. Lexus has signed many endorsement contracts with golfers and tennis players. They have even begun to sponsor some of the United States Golf Association events, including some of the men’s major tournaments and women’s major tournaments. The hybrid has become such a success that it even signed on with Paul McCartney. The former Beatle even gave his input on different feature for the new model, RX 400h.
Lexus has had a great, yet short history. They continue to work to achieve the highest quality automobile, and always want to be in the forefront of new technology. You probably know someone who drives a Lexus. I’m sure they will tell you what a great car it is. Many people are proud to be a Lexus owner.
