History of Lamborghini

If someone gave you one million dollars, and you decided to spend part of it a car, which car would you spend it on? Well, if you asked that question to 100 people, odds would be that most of them said a Lamborghini. They realize the luxury of this automobile. The following is a brief history of Lamborghini, as well as its influence in racing. Find out what makes this car go.

The Original Lamborghini

This Italian automobile manufacturer is also known as Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. It was founded by Ferruccio Lamborghini in 1963, to go with his successful tractor company. Ferruccio complained that the Ferrari had troubles that needed to be fixed. But when he was denied by Ferrari himself, he decided to fix it up on his own. He needed his car to have a V12 engine. Shortly after that, still in 1963, the prototype of his new automobile began to make its first public appearances. 1964 was the first year they became available to the public, and more than 130 were sold. A bull symbolized this great automobile right from its inception.

The Later Years

The 1970s brought on an oil crisis that hurt many companies, and Lamborghini was no different. They declared bankruptcy in 1978, and the Italian based Mimran brothers took over production. Just nine years later however, the Chrysler Corporation came in and brought the company. This was short lived as well. Lamborghini continued its years under brief ownership with an Indonesian investment group purchased it in 1994. Financial troubles that overtook the prior owners also affected this group, and finally in 1998 Lamborghini found a home with Audi. They were finally able to get the control they needed from a stable group.

Racing and Lamborghini

Ferruccio Lamborghini’s original vision made it clear that his automobiles could not be involved in auto racing. He did not feel as though his company could devote those resources and money that would be required to run a competitive program. But under new management, BMW and Lamborghini teamed to produce a racing car. But it was pretty much maintained and built solely by BMW. When Lamborghini did produce a race car in 1986, it only raced in one race. It could not find a sponsor. Later on they became a big engine supplier for Formula One. They would later build race versions of their Diablo, and have competed in racing ever since.
