Today, BMW is one of the biggest car manufacturers in the world. BMW also has a very rich history, the company has been around since before World War I and it has undergone many changes in its time.
Beginning to World War II
BMW was founded by Karl Friedrich Rapp in 1917. “BMW” stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke. The company’s original primary business was the manufacturing of engines but switched to railroad breaks after the end of World War I. In the 1920s BMW started production on their first motorcycle and first car. During World War II BMW started to manufacture a line of motorcycles for the German Army, as well as cars and airplane engines. BMW did not have the best reputation during World War II, as they commonly used slave labor and concentration camp attendees to do their work. At the end of World War II many of their factories had been bombed.
Post War to 1990
After World War II BMW was banned from manufacturing for a few years and did not manufacture new cars and motorcycles until the late 40s and early 50s. From the initial post war era until 1990, BMW grew tenfold and become one of the world’s leading car manufacturers. The production of the E series started in this time, as well as the BMW New Class Series, which was a line of compact cars. The first BMW roadster, the Z1 roadster, was manufactured in the late 1980s.
1990 to Present
Today BMW is one of the world’s leading auto manufacturers. In the early 1990s BMW started to produce automobiles outside of Germany for the first time. They set up a manufacturing plan in South Carolina. Today BMW produces all over the world, including Russia, Australia and Egypt. In the mid 1990s BMW and Rolls-Royce began a joint venture together. BMW continues to be a leader in its market, producing many different styles of cars and motorcycles. They even have their own Formula One racing team. The future looks bright for BMW.
